Post Chapter Approved 2019 – Necrons Analysis

My thoughts after a lot of play testing with Necrons both prior to Chapter Approved 2019 and after is as follows for those interested.
Overall Necrons want a Battalion and possibly two additional specialized detachments (Outrider/Spearhead in most cases) to max CP count. Getting cheaper HQs which are most of the time a tax that only fills a support role in the army is very good for ensuring you can get a little extra muscle in there. Necron Lords and Overlords specially look very compelling to fit these requirements.
For starters i think you always want a solid anti tank weapon or several. Doomsday Arks x3 or nine (9) Heavy Destroyers seems the best suited to me to guarantee you can pack a long ranged punch. Due to the nature of Necrons most of the time you are stuck at midrange.
The outrider is where you really have the most flexibility and houses many of Necrons best units. If you want to gear towards Destroyers, Wraiths, Tomb Blades this is where you want to finalize that selection to determine the rest of your list.
An alternative to this Outrider Detachment is the triple Doom Scythe Airwing which was popularized by our very own Christopher T. However I don’t think that detachment is a must as the other options are solid options as well. What I think the Airwing detachment does very well (better), is dishing out a ton of mortal wounds. Most armies just don’t want any part of that, but I feel that’s a one turn gimmick that can fall apart if one flyer is dropped Turn 1, which is very likely against most opponents.
Alternatively, I have been putting serious serious play testing time with C’tans and for the most part found it to be very successful when properly supported. Without good support they perform worst than every other option mentioned prior. However with regards to tossing mortal wounds at your opponent they are the best option superior to the Airwing even as they are more difficult to take out in a turn or two and can hit single targets as well as blobs and castles. Yes I am advocating for C’tans post-CA they are a very respectable option for this interchangeable slot.
How many Ctans? That’s the next question i assume everyone would have. For starters always take the Deceiver if you have room for a C’tan he is the number one draft pick because he gives you flexibility while still carrying out the main roll of mortal wound spitting just as good as any other. Secondly if you are taking more C’tan take four (4) total (the Deceiver plus three others) this maximizes your powers. Tested it enough to confirm its either one or four no in-betweens if you want maximum carnage.
The Battalion should be the last thing you fill out specifically the HQ sections of all detachments should be our last concern, as all HQs are there for support in most cases and are very interchangeable so accommodate them so they play their role while allowing the rest of your actual army to do it’s job.

Deployment – Astra Militarum

Battle Round 1 – Necrons
Deceiver redeploys himself and one unit of immortals. Astra Militarum use the bombardment stratagem and take prepared positions for –4CP.

Doomsday Arks kill Commander Pask. The rest of my forces kill two infantry squads.

Battle Round 1 – Astra Militarum
Guard T1 movement phase.

Orders! Move! Move! Move!

Guard shooting kills 8 Necron Immortals and deals 8 dmg to a Doomsday Ark. Quantum Deflection [1CP] ignores about 10dmg from the Imperial Guard tanks. Orikan the Diviner’s Invulnerable Save protects much of the infantry. Imperial Guard killed no units in Turn 1.
Battle Round 2 – Necrons

Necrons Turn 2 it’s a C’tan feeding frenzy! I deal a truck load of mortal wounds via Transdimensional Thunderbolt, Cosmic Fire and activating the Wrath of the C’tan to unleash a third thunderbolt. I kill or heavily damage many units around the Tank Commander warlord.

Necrons C’tans charge in on the Vulture, Tank Commander and Straken. Straken gets killed but the vehicles survive heavily damaged.

Battle Round 2 – Astra Militarum
First Rank! Second Rank! 58 shots into the C’tan = 0 wounds inflicted.

Nightbringer shot down by Guard Artillery namely the Wyvern was able to finish him off. The Master of Ordnance brings the Doomsday Ark down to one wound left. The Guardmen fix bayonets and CHARGE! At the Transcendent C’tan.

C’tan brought down to two wounds left by Guardsman barely escapes and fails do kill anything in retaliation as the priest’s Rosarius Invul deflects all damage. THE EMPEROR PROTECTS!!

Battle Round 3 – Necrons

Necron shooting is brutal on Turn 3. Many of the Guard vehicles were heavily damage so the Doomsday Arks finished off one Basilisk, one Manticore, one Tank Commander and one Vulture all had three or less wounds left. Maxed out Big Game Hunter.

Immortals charge and finish the Priest. Where’s your Emperor’s protection now?

The Astra Militarum retaliates and kills the C’tan and unit of immortals breaching their lines.
End of Round 3 wraps up and my opponent Concedes the game. Necrons C’tan spam for the win!
Final Score
Necrons: 20 VP
Astra Militarum: 8VP
Astra Militarum Concedes. Necron Victory.

Ultramarines activate the redeploy stratagem for two Command Points [-2CP].

Battle Round 1 – Necrons

Deceiver casts Transdimensional Thunderbolt on the Executioner, doesn’t damage it, but damages several models around it.

Necrons gun down two centurions and leave the last one with one wound left 🙁 They also bring the Executioner down to two wounds remaining 🙁
No kills for the Necrons in Turn 1. I forgot to activate Methodical Destruction to overcome the -1 from Tigurius even though I had the card out as a reminder.

Battle Round 1 – Ultramarines
Sternguard deep strike and kill four Necron Immortals.

Ultramarines shooting.

Fight phase for the Ultramarines.

Tomb Blades wiped out, 4 destroyers, 17 immortals killed as well.
Battle Round 2 – Necrons
Necrons T2 moved closer to the Ultramarines.

Wiped all units of Intercessors, killed most of the Sternguard and Centurions finished off. The Executioner somehow survived yet again. But the writing was on the wall for the Ultramarines now that they only had three units left to attack with and one of them being a heavily damaged Executioner.

Necrons fight phase.

Ultramarines concede the game as the Necrons continue to advance on them.
Final Score
Necrons: 9 Victory Points
Ultramarines: 8 Victory Points
Ultramarines concede. Necron Victory.

Necrons seize the initiative.
Battle Round 1 – Necrons
I tried to sneak up on Dan and gun down the Swarmlord early in a failed attempt.
Battle Round 1 – Tyranids
Dan’s hiveguard did serious dmg to my ghost arks even while i activated Quantum Deflection stealers zoomed across the table and charged my ghost arks killing both. Warriors disembarked wondering what happened to their ride.

Battle Round 2 – Necrons
I focused my attention on the Genestealers near my deployment zone and deep striked behind Dan’s Neurothrope warlord as well as the objective i placed behind him aiming to slay the warlord and get the bonus point for this mission. The Deathmarks got slay the warlord with some well placed mortal wounds. I managed to wipe out most of the Genestealers but i wiffed against the Swarmlord for a second time with all doomsday arks and i critically failed to land an 8″ charge with a cp reroll with my Lychguard whom were supposed to handle the hiveguard situation for me and max Gangbusters.

Battle Round 2 – Tyranids
They rushed my deployment zone and gunned down my Lychguard unit. Things looked bad for the Necrons.
Battle Round 3 – Necrons
I cleared the Swarmlord finally and dealt with the Genestealers to my left. I opted to let the Deathmarks die in sacrifice to get 1 more vp from holding the bonus objective.

Ultimately losing my engineers early aswell as failing the Lychguard charge was too clutch. I conceded the game on turn 4 i didn’t have the means to continue gaining points he shut down my ability to get any vps from gangbusters (hive guard) and engineers.
Dan had some well executed tactics and while it looked like i had an advantage after slaying his warlord, not being able to tag the Lychguard and losing 2 ghost arks in a turn was a tall mountain to climb.
i called it after top of turn 4. So Dan did not take his turn i was hoping to at least clear my half of the table to fight it out but i failed to kill the Broodlord in my lines….it was going to get ugly. I am sure final score would have Dan with a very commanding lead.

MathHammer App Review

Initial Thoughts
MathHammer is a term coined to by the 40K Fanbase to refer to the likelihood of dealing/surviving damage for/from certain units. While it also serves other purposes, this is what I would say is the basis of mathhammer, and why it is important to some of us in the community to know what the ‘probability’ is behind our dice rolls in order to optimize our target priority.
This being said, a quick google search for “mathhammer 40k” will produce several results many of which are free web-based apps. So why would we be interested in paying for a piece of software that serves the same function? I came into this very skeptical
Interface
The app design leaves a bit to be desired for my taste. I feel like some of the options take some exploring to get a grasp of them, and I spend 3 days giving this app a try to familiarize myself with what it has to offer but at the end of the day I find the GUI cumbersome and not as user friendly as I’d like it to be. This also might be due to being a cell phone app and thus less room to work with, but I can certainly see room for improvement with the design.
Function
The app works, it delivers as far as mathhammer goes (I did not double check the math though) but the results seem to be in-line with what i would expect from certain things. It gives you a break down on the ROI (Return on Investment) so that you can see how well spent your points are when pitting unit vs units, this is very neat and one of the best features in the app. My favorite feature is being able to compare 1 unit to multiple defenders until I discovered where this was located I was not quite whelmed, but this is definetly the secret sauce for my sensibilities as I enjoy being able to quickly analyze how my unit will perform against a white range of popular enemy units with 1 button press.
Value
YMMV when it comes to determining if the app is worth purchase over just using a free one. I think if you are attending tournaments this is a must have app, as it can do a lot for your list building and even in-game decision making by having access to checking ROI. More casual players may want to hold off until there are improvements to the interface and it becomes easier to use.
Suggestions
I am on the fence with this app, it has a lot of potential to be something indespensable to every 40K player. I would like to see a cleaner, clearer, easier interface where you can quickly check things. Also including common built it profiles would be great, my favorite free app does exactly that with a profile for guardsmen, space marines, vehicle, knight readily available to compare to. This app can certainly take that several steps further but requires the user to engage the not so friendly interface to enter profiles and then compare them. Also I’d enjoy a feature that compares several attackers to 1 defender (the opposite of what it’s able to do currently) since it is quite handy to quickly determine which unit in my list is best suited to deal with a specific target. Saving an storing profiles could be improved with sorting elements aswell reducing the amount of scrolling. Last but not least I was not thrilled about not being able to choose which weapons I wanted to review on a specific profile, If my unit is equipped with 4 bolters and 1 missile launcher and I want to compare how the missile launcher in this unit performs against a vehicle I would like to be able to do that without the app also including the 4 bolters I listed in the unit profile. In the age of split fire lacking this level of function feels like a missed opportunity.
Overall
I give the app 3 Imperial Servo Skulls out of 5. The app is decent for all, good for tournament players. It can certainly see some improvements to push it to the next level and make it a must have.
